Appearance: How Yelena Looks
Personality: Above all else, Yelena Belova is a survivor. She lived a false childhood with a fake family whom she loved dearly, but once those years had passed by Yelena was thrust into the very visceral and grown-up world of the Red Room where she was trained to be a Black Widow. What choice did she have but to become a harder version of herself? Pain and trauma build a thick skin and a cynical outlook. That’s how it happened for Yelena. She swapped her innocence for a more realistic view on life after she spent some time being molded into the assassin she would become. Mind control would change her, give her wounds that would take time and help to heal, but Yelena is nothing if not resilient. Once she escaped the influence of Dreykov and the Red Room, she had her sister, her mother and her father, the fake family who had raised her, there to help her on her feet. That’s an important detail because family is important to Yelena. Even though it was all a façade, Yelena is quoted as saying that their family was real to her. She’s braver than most, daring to go after the institution that shaped her into the assassin she became and succeeding in taking it down with the help of her family. Her sense of humor is deadpan and mostly sarcastic, but she is able to smile from time to time. Happiness has not completely evaded her, especially now that the Red Room is out of the picture. Yelena has said that she is a dog person and I believe that perhaps part of the reason she adopts her Akita Fanny is that she cannot have children and at the end of the movie Black Widow, by the end credits scene featuring said dog, her sister Natasha has died. She seems to be close with her dog, at least.

What did they do to end up here?: That’s an easy one. Yelena has had a long and fruitful career as a Black Widow assassin. She’s killed a lot of people.
